Today I picked up the books! The whole point of this exercise! They look beautiful! For the last few weeks I've been putting together a mailing list, and nearly all the books are allocated. I used to work for Delivering Special Provision Locally, a Herts County Council funded initiative to support children with SEND and their families in mainstream schools. I asked some of the managers if they would email the schools in their areas, and I got a brilliant response. My former colleague also said that I could use the internal mail system from the school where she works. Sending books through Hertfordshire schools means that I save money on postage!
I have also attended one of the coffee mornings set up by Herts Welcomes Refugees, and met some families that way. And a tweet I wrote on Sunday got a huge response from schools with Ukrainian children.
So the books are going out over the next few days. The crowdfunder money landed in my account yesterday so I can pay the printer and postage. I've almost packaged all the books up and they are going out into the world.
The teachers, host families and Ukrainians who have asked for books are really looking forward to receiving them. And I can't wait to hear back from them when they arrive!
